The OnePlus 12R prematurely leaks as the brand’s most affordable 2024 high-end option

Are you excited (or at least intrigued) by the recently leaked OnePlus 12 but don’t think you can afford the company’s next super flagship when it makes its commercial debut, which could be as early as the end of the year? Why not consider the OnePlus 12R instead?

The simple answer to that question, of course, is that there is no such device yet, but believe it or not, we now seem to know pretty much everything there is to know about it, as does its non-R-branded cousin.

That’s right, the almost always reliable Steve Hemmerstoffer, i.e. @OnLeaksaka Steve H.McFly, has returned once again from the future to bring us an array of high quality product representations of the other The high-end phone OnePlus is reportedly planning to release (relatively) soon, as well as All of its main specifications and features.

A 6.7-inch beast with a flat screen (more or less) and an alert slider

Admit it, that’s a pretty cringeworthy description of a OnePlus phone that’s unlikely to cost as much as a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra or Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max, for example. The screen, which may appear completely flat at first glance, is actually “slightly curved”, as described by Steve H.similar to the OnePlus 11R and slightly at odds with the design approach of the “standard” OnePlus 11.

Said flat AMOLED display is expected to measure a generous approximately 6.7 inches diagonal while sporting a 1.5K resolution (exact number of pixels remains unknown) and supports silky-smooth 120Hz refresh rate technology.

Under the hood, the OnePlus 12R is almost guaranteed to pack the same cutting-edge Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor as the OnePlus 11, thereby dramatically improving the raw performance of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 powered OnePlus 11R, almost certainly remaining a big step behind the OnePlus 12, which will likely ship with a brand new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC inside.
On the outside, this potentially affordable Android powerhouse we’re looking at today largely fails to surprise, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however. Not with razor-thin screen bezels, an ever-stylish center punch, a practical and stylish alert slider on one side, a volume rocker on the other, and a fairly crowded but also undeniably stylish rear camera module that deserves some special attention as follows…

More megapixels, more battery capacity, more money?

You know the largely useless 2MP macro sensor found on the back of the OnePlus 11R along with a solid 50MP main shooter and a decent 8MP ultra-wide angle lens? The 12R will apparently get rid of that altogether, opting instead for a very useful and very competent-sounding 32MP telephoto camera with 2X optical zoom capabilities alongside the same 50MP main and 8MP ultra-wide rear cameras.

On the front, meanwhile, the single 16MP selfie snapper is likely to remain virtually unchanged, with another big change reported in the department being battery size. While it definitely doesn’t look chunky in these newly leaked factory CAD-based renders, the OnePlus 12R is expected to add 500mAh to its predecessor’s 5,000mAh battery capacity, bringing the total to a very rare 5,500mAh for today’s “mainstream” high-end smartphones.

With blazing-fast 100W charging going nowhere and storage and memory caps once again reaching 256 and 16GB respectively, we can’t help but fear that the 11R’s reasonable price will have to go up to cover the aforementioned processor, camera and battery upgrades.

Of course, the OnePlus 11R isn’t available in many markets, costing roughly $490 in India in an entry-level 128GB storage/8GB RAM configuration, for example, and unfortunately, similar geographic restrictions are also likely to apply to the 12R early next year, which looks like a much bigger issue than a possible price hike.
