OnePlus Open preview: the revolutionary of the sector is just around the corner!

Now, while we know a OnePlus foldable phone is coming, and while we seem to know a lot, we still have some major gaps in our perceived knowledge of the potential device. Initially, most expected that OnePlus wouldn’t shy away from the overused “Fold” name, but interestingly enough, recent rumors point out that the company that isn’t satisfied has, hm, settled on the “OnePlus Open” name, which sounds deliciously fresh.

What will this OnePlus Open look like? Let’s take a look, shall we?

• Triple camera configuration: 48MP wide angle + 48MP ultra wide angle + 64MP telephoto

Unmistakably OnePlus!

Based on the leaked design renders of the phone, we can say one thing: the Open will be unmistakably a OnePlus device, closely following the signature design language OnePlus has been building on for years!

OnePlus would use the inward folding type, similar to Google’s Galaxy Z Fold and Pixel Fold range, which would protect the larger internal display from external damage. However, OnePlus is reportedly willing to up the ante by employing a slightly larger display than the other two competitors. The OnePlus Open will reportedly score a 7.8-inch internal screen, but we don’t have the exact numbers on the external display.

Judging by the renders, the phone may use an aluminum frame with smooth edges and slightly curved edges. The back of the phone appears to be using a faux leather or raw sandstone back, which would give a twist to the design of the phone.

A large circular camera island houses the triple rear cameras, which look mostly similar to the OnePlus 11’s camera housing. An LED flash in the top corner of the device looks a bit out of place, but we’re sure OnePlus might have a good reason to put the flash there – provided the renders are 100% accurate, of course.

Similarly to the OnePlus 11, we expect the OnePlus Open to have an optical fingerprint scanner, along with Face Unlock.

When it comes to the display situation on the OnePlus Open, we have a few gaps to our knowledge. External display specs are virtually unknown at this point. However, we do know that the phone will house a 7.8-inch internal OLED display, which is 0.2 inches larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Pixel Fold, and possibly the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Additionally, the display will sport a QHD resolution of 2560 by 1440 pixels, as well as a 1-120Hz refresh rate that will make for a very smooth and rewarding scrolling experience that will change dynamically based on the content on screen. Here’s hoping OnePlus uses a bright OLED display that’s easy to see in broad daylight conditions.

As far as the hinge mechanism is concerned, there are practically no rumors, so we will probably have to wait for the official announcement event to learn more about the underlying device

mechanisms.

In terms of biometrics, we have a strong feeling that an optical fingerprint would be used in the display, most likely on the external display, but the internal one could also potentially score such a sensor.

The OnePlus Open is said to use the following camera setup: a 48MP wide-angle main camera with largely unknown specifications will be joined by a 48MP ultra-wide-angle snapper, and finally, rounding out the rear setup, there will be a 64MP telephoto camera with unknown zoom capabilities.

You’ll be able to take selfies with an external 32MP or internal 20MP camera. It doesn’t appear that any of the cameras will be hidden under the display like on the latest Galaxy Z Fold phones. OnePlus will use a much simpler punch-hole design, but we don’t mind.

Of course, the rumors seem to be steady that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will power the next foldable phone. This is quite certain and also quite logical, as OnePlus flagships are always equipped with the latest Qualcomm chips available. The OnePlus Open will hardly differ in this regard.

However, with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 just around the corner, we wouldn’t be surprised but probably very happy to find upcoming chips powering OnePlus’ first foldable phone.

In terms of memory and storage, it seems OnePlus can only rely on one combination: 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, certainly without a microSD card slot for further expansion. Let’s hope a 512GB storage version makes the rounds, too, eventually.

OnePlus Open will definitely be a 5G compatible phone. Judging by previous OnePlus devices, we expect Wi-Fi 6 and hopefully Wi-Fi 6E to make an appearance.

If the OnePlus Open follows the OnePlus 11 in terms of its software support policy, we’d expect it to get four years of major Android updates, as well as five years of security updates. This means that it will be supported until 2027 and will receive Android 14, 15, 16 and 17; security updates will be released until 2028.

According to the rumors, the OnePlus Open will support charging speeds of up to 67W, which could easily make it one of the fastest-charging foldable devices out there. OnePlus already sells some of the fastest-charging devices in the US (The OnePlus 11 charges fully in half an hour), so we’re pretty excited about the OnePlus Open’s potential sub-hour charge times.

And hopefully, the ever-satisfying company will bundle the charger into the OnePlus One box!

Both use the same book form factor, with large internal displays and potentially great cameras, so it’s up to the OnePlus One to beat the competition.

The OnePlus Open has all the potential to not only disrupt the foldable establishment, but also rise to the top and become the foldable to beat. Yes, OnePlus One has all the features to revolutionize the sector.

Price-wise, we’re not really sure what to expect from the OnePlus Open, but we doubt it will be available on the cheap. However, given OnePlus’ penchant for slightly more aggressively priced devices, we have a small hope that the OnePlus Open would cost less than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 or Pixel Fold.
