Latina actress as ‘Snow White’ in Disney’s upcoming reimagining

Rachel Zegler is best known for her starring role in Steven Spielberg’s reboot West Side History(2021). That role eventually landed her in Hollywood where she has since starred in films such as DC Shazam: Fury of the Gods(2023) and her upcoming lead role inThe Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes(2023), which is expected to be released later this year. Walt Disney Pictures also cast her as the Disney Princess herself, Snow White for a 2024 release, which caused a frenzy among social media platforms. People verbally attacked the actress for being cast in a role meant for someone of German descent, as the story was initially written during the 19th century in Germany. Zegler’s heritage is the main topic of discussion as she is a Latina actress whose parents are a Colombian mother and a father of Polish descent. The internet appears to be in a frenzy as Disney’s casting choice is perceived as a “whitewash” intended to normalize “international replacement of whites throughout the West,” according to Way of the World on Twitter:

Zegler being attacked in a role because he belongs to a different race or culture isn’t the first time the internet has exploded because of this type of ad. Most recently, Halle Bailey, the actress who played Ariel in Disney’s other live-action remake The little Mermaid(2023), he also faced eminence backlash for being cast in a role that has traditionally gone to someone with a white cultural background, seeing as the original story was from Denmark and published in 1845. But this casting choice didn’t is the only backlash the upcoming Disney reimagining is becoming.

Disney received strong backlash after casting non-dwarf Little People in roles meant for them

The internet is in worse shape after it is discovered that the little ones will not be playing the seven dwarfs in Snow White and will instead be played by people of color leaving one of the positions of the dwarfs to the great little actor, Peter Dinklage. Dinklage has enjoyed great success in Hollywood, such as multiple Screen Actors Guild awards and even winning a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series – Drama for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister on the hit HBO series game of Thrones(2011). Because people just weren’t angry enough, the internet exploded, and for no good reason, when it was announced that only one little person would be playing the role of one of the seven dwarfs in Snow White.

The actor went so far as to call Disney’s casting choices “offensive” as he went on to say the following:

Literally no offense to anything, but I was a little surprised, they were very proud to cast a Latina actress for the role of Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and see what you are doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in a way, but you’re still doing that fucking backwards story about seven dwarfs living together in a cave. Have I done nothing to further the case from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.

The Walt Disney Pictures studio said the photos posted online were “misleading” as the Daily Mail published them without Disney’s approval. However, the media started publishing the photos after it was confirmed that Snow White’s photo was a stunt double for Rachel Zegler and the casting choices for the seven dwarfs appear to be the real deal. Snow White (2024) will hit theaters next year and will be directed by Marc Webb.
