If you’ve ever sat in traffic thinking, “I really wish I could do more with my time,” then this article is for you. Traffic is, unfortunately, a common part of modern life, but that doesn’t mean it has to bring your productivity to an abrupt halt.
Thankfully, the best CarPlay apps for the job can help you get things done, even when you’re waiting for your exit, following a detour, or anything else that can add a lot of time to your commute.
However, it’s worth reiterating that these apps should only be used when it’s safe to do so, and should only be interacted with via the CarPlay interface. You should always focus on the road.
That said, here are some apps to get the job done using CarPlay. For more information, be sure to check out our range of best CarPlay apps for general use.
Calendar/Dashboard
If you use your iPhone’s Calendar app, you can get a good look at your next event through the Dashboard view on the CarPlay display.
Showing your next appointment, this part of the UI will fade if not paid attention to, but it’s good for seeing what you’re getting into at a glance.
It’s worth noting that you can’t jump directly to some appointments within the Calendar app, and you’ll need to open the relevant meeting app.
Memorandum
Apple’s Reminders app is undoubtedly one of the most useful iOS stock apps, thanks to a number of improvements over the past few years.
Through CarPlay, it is possible to record certain items using Siri with your voice, allowing you to add new activities and add them to specific lists. This is great for jotting something down for later, but it can also power third-party apps through API integrations.
This means that if you happen to be using Things 3 as your task manager, you can queue up tasks in your inbox throughout the day to take care of when you get home. Some apps work better with Reminders than others, so it might be worth checking what the limits are before throwing a half-dozen tasks into the ether.
Meeting apps
Of course, communication in today’s world is everything, and while iMessage and the Phone app are built into CarPlay by default, there’s a whole world of third-party options across a variety of platforms.
Messaging apps such as Whatsapp or Telegram are supported, but you will also find voice communication, including Zoom, Skype and even Microsoft Teams.
Of course, you won’t find the likes of Slack (we can’t imagine anything worse than browsing a massive list of channels and DMs while behind the wheel), but for many there will be an option to dial in your next calendar appointment on the go .
Audiobook and podcast app
Imagine the scene: you’ve recorded a long meeting and will need to listen to it again once you arrive at your destination, adding even more time to your day.
Or does it? With some audiobook or podcast apps (Pocket Casts, for example), you can upload files to the cloud for playback wherever you are, and they work with CarPlay.
Something to consider the next time you dread listening to the hours of a meeting you just arrived at!
Maps/Google Maps/Waze
The holy trinity of navigation, Maps, Google Maps and Waze can help you find a rest stop from which to work outside the car.
It may seem obvious, but if you are on a long journey and Truly you need to check an email or submit a business announcement, your best bet is to pull over to do so.
Will you be using one of these apps to get the job done? Or are you more passionate about listening to music and podcasts until you get to your destination? Let us know!
