AND Chat GPT already old news? It seems impossible, with the explosion in popularity of AI penetrating every aspect of our lives, whether it’s digital masterpieces forged with the best AI art generators OR helping us with our online purchases.
But despite being the leader in the AI arms race – and for power Microsoft’s Bing AI – looks like ChatGPT is losing momentum. Second SimilarWebtraffic to OpenAI’s ChatGPT site is down nearly 10% from last month, while metrics from Sensor tower it also showed that iOS app downloads are also down.
As reported by Insiderspaying users of the more powerful GPT-4 model (access to which is included in Chat GPT Plus) have complained on social media and OpenAI forums about a drop in the quality of the chatbot’s output.
A common consensus was that GPT-4 was able to generate output faster, but at a lower quality level. Peter Yang, a leading product for Roblox, took to Twitter to denounce the bot’s recent work, claiming that “the quality seems worse.” One forum user said the recent GPT-4 experience was “like driving a Ferrari for a month, then suddenly it turns into a beat-up old pickup.”
GPT4 output changed recently. It generates faster, but the quality seems worse. Perhaps OpenAI is trying to save costs. Has anyone else noticed this?May 21, 2023
Why is GPT-4 suddenly in trouble?
Some users were even harsher, calling the bot “dumber” and “lazier” than before, with a long thread on the OpenAI forums full of complaints of all kinds. One user, ‘bitbytebit’, described it as “totally awful now” and “brain-damaged compared to before”.
According to users, there was a point a few weeks ago where GPT-4 got massively faster, but at the expense of performance. The AI community has speculated that this may be due to a change in OpenAI’s design ethos behind the more powerful machine learning model, i.e., breaking it down into multiple smaller models trained in specific areas, which can act in tandem to provide the same end result while being cheaper to run than OpenAI.
OpenAI has yet to officially confirm this to be the case, as there hasn’t been a mention of such a major change to how GPT-4 works. It’s a credible explanation according to industry experts like Sharon Zhou, CEO of the AI construction company You laminatewho described the multi-model idea as the “natural next step” in the development of GPT-4.
AIs eating AIs
However, there is another pressing issue with ChatGPT that some users suspect may be to blame for the recent performance degradation, an issue that the AI industry seems largely unprepared to address.
If you’re not familiar with the term “AI cannibalism,” let me break it down to a nutshell: Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Google Bard scour the public internet for data to use when generating responses. In recent months, a veritable boom in AI-generated online content, including an unwanted torrent of Novels written by AI on Kindle Unlimited – means that LLMs are increasingly likely to pick up materials already produced by an AI when searching for information on the web.
This runs the risk of creating a feedback loop, where AI models “learn” from content that was itself AI-generated, resulting in a gradual decline in the consistency and quality of the output. With numerous LLMs now available to both professionals and the general public, the cannibalism risk of AI is becoming more prevalent, especially since there is as yet no meaningful demonstration of how AI models can accurately distinguish between “real” information and AI-generated content.
Artificial intelligence discussions have largely centered around the risks it poses to society – for example, Facebook owner Meta recently refused to open up its new speech-generation AI to the public deemed “too dangerous” to be released. But content cannibalization is more of a risk to the future than AI itself; something that threatens to ruin the functionality of tools like ChatGPT, which depend on human-made source materials to learn and generate content.
Do you use ChatGPT or GPT-4? If you do, have you heard that there has been a drop in quality recently or have you simply lost interest in the chatbot? I’d love to hear from you on Twitter. With so many competitors popping up, is it possible OpenAI’s dominance is coming to an end?
