You have less than a week to save photos from My Photo Stream to your iPhone, iPad or Mac, as Apple is closing the service.
Apple announced in May that My Photo Stream will be shutting down, although you may not have noticed. It was a slow close, with uploads closing on June 26 and the final closure is coming on July 26th.
My Photo Stream was part of iCloud which let you share 1,000 of your most recent photos across all your connected Apple devices without reducing your allotted storage capacity.
With this service gone, you may find that you no longer have access to certain images on a device where they weren’t physically saved. This could prove inconvenient, so before Apple hits the Off button, follow the steps below to make sure all your images are where you need them.
My Photo Stream is closing: what to do now
You can still share photos to your Apple devices using iCloud Photos after My Photo Stream. However, this will take up storage space, which means you may have to look for a more expensive tier of iCloud to get enough space for all your photos.
The other option you will have once My Photo Stream is gone is to simply transfer the images between devices manually. This will require the right type of cable to connect your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to whatever other device or storage system you’re using, but in theory, it should be as easy as dragging and dropping your files.
The easiest way to keep your photos where you want them is to use My Photo Stream while it’s still available to make sure your photos are saved on the devices you want to use. Below we have a section on how to go about checking out.
To be clear though, you aren’t actually losing any photos when the My Photo Stream shuts down. You’ll simply lose the ability to access these images on any device unless you’ve also set up iCloud Photos to do so. By default, you’ll still be able to find any existing photos you’ve taken on the device that originally took them.
So, with that explanation out of the way, here’s how to save photos from My Photo Stream to your Apple devices to ensure you still have access to the images on all your devices after shutdown.
How to save photos from My Photo Stream to iPhone or iPad
1. In the Photos app, tap the Album header

You’ll find it second from the left at the bottom of the screen, or in the sidebar if you’re on an iPad.
2. Open the My Photo Stream album

As the default iOS photo album, it should appear at the top of the list.
3. Select the photos you want to save to your device

You can select photos one by one. But the easiest way to select multiple photos is to tap the Select button on the top right and then tap all the photos you want to save.
4. Tap Share, then Save Image

The Share menu can also let you send selected images somewhere else, like your emails, AirDrop, or the Files app. Choose whatever location makes sense for your needs.
How to save photos from My Photo Stream on Mac
This process is a little different on a Mac, but just as simple.
- In the Photos app, open the file My Photo Stream album.
- Select photos want to save to the Mac.
- Drag and drop photos to the Library header in the sidebar to save them.
As mentioned above, Apple will shut down the service completely on July 26th. Make sure you’re done before then, otherwise you’ll need to save your photos to the devices via iCloud or physical data connections as mentioned above.
